It wasn’t a flame from the start: I had to commune with the stone and see what it wanted to be. I spent time chipping off the chippy stuff and smoothing sections and began to see the layers, stripes, and its deep golden interior. I lopped a disjointed corner off and the flame started to emerge. As I carved it the Bangles’ song Eternal Flame mixed up with The Flame by Cheap Trick ran through my head on repeat.  This was fun to carve, and also challenging to find the sections that would glow when the light hit them right. I hope you get to see the stone at different times of the day to see how the light refracts through in ways that make it look lit from within. I wanted to have it standing high enough that you would be looking up at it, so after a few weeks of searching and a 13 hour roundtrip to eastern WA I was able to secure the perfect column.  Please enjoy.
